That was one heck of a great summer we had, and fall is off to a gorgeous start, but don’t forget that winter isn’t far away and often arrives unexpectedly! Don’t let Jack Frost get the better of you when it comes to keeping your home safe, sound…and warm! We’ve outlined the top tasks to get your home in shape for the upcoming winter months to help you save money and avoid damage to your home even after the snow has thawed.

Indoor job checklist:

• Get your furnace inspected every few years, and change the furnace filter for cleaner air and improved air flow
• Inspect windows and doors for drafts and seal with weather stripping as needed
• Get your wood stove or fireplace cleaned and inspected
• Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
• Remove any window-style air conditioners and replace the window pane
• Check that your sump-pump works – you’ll need it in the spring when the snow thaws

Outdoor job checklist:

• Rake up leaves, especially along pathways, entrances, and where they can accumulate and damage your lawn
• Inspect your roof and get damaged or missing shingles or tiles replaced
• Clean out your eaves and gutters; Sealing up areas that drip to avoid ice from forming on colder days
• Use a good quality exterior caulk between siding, cracks, windows and door frames to keep cold air and critters out
• Check that all outdoor lighting is in good working condition. It gets dark early now, so be sure to keep paths and entrances safely lit
• If you have a steel roof, be sure that you’ve got snow clips installed to prevent a build-up of snow from falling in unwanted areas
• Trim branches that are too close to your home or sidewalks – snow accumulation could break them off and cause damage
• Cover up or move deck/yard furniture indoors
• Clean out your flower boxes or planters, trim back perennials where needed and store breakables and deck décor items carefully
• Drain and clear water out of hoses and sprinkler systems, and turn off outdoor water supply
• Buy salt, sand or other ice-melting products now to prepare for those dangerous, icy days
