While we know there’s still some great summer weather and even a few beach days left, many homeowners are eager to get a head start on their fall décor come the first few weeks of September. There is so much about fall to enjoy and celebrate, but it seems to be such a short season around here; before we know it, old man winter will come knocking. Let’s find out what’s trending and find clever ways to decorate your home to better enjoy all things autumn:
1. Easy on the orange
Just because the leaves will soon be turning those gorgeous yellow, orange, and dark red hues doesn’t mean that’s our only colour palette to work with. We can usher in all those other colours of the season, such as the dusty green of corn fields, cherry red pomegranates, pale white pumpkins, earthy wood tones, and don’t forget that you can still infuse your décor with what’s left of those bright summer pinks and purples. Another new trend we’re seeing is painting your gourds and pumpkins! You can go for a matte grey, shiny gold or silver, or any colour that accents your existing shades around the home.
2. Let’s eat!
Fall is harvest time, so what better way to celebrate than by featuring an amazing bounty of delightful foods in and around your home?! Start with stocking decorative bowls with fresh apples or lining your mantle or coffee table with gourds and pumpkins. You can also decorate your kitchen or dining room with corn husks, garlic braids, multi-coloured corn, chestnuts, wheat sheaves, and more. Outdoors, you can add in some hay bales, corn stalks and pumpkins (but don’t put them out until October so they don’t wilt in the heat).
3. Load up on patterns and textures
It’s always in style to have an assortment of textures around your home, and fall is no exception. Get creative with pinecone centre pieces, feathers in your flower arrangements, wool blankets, mixed wood firewood logs, plush velvet cushions or faux fur throws. You can infuse those rusty fall colours into your designs or try a neutral/brown theme. Plaids are big this year; from table cloths to cushions and throws, you can’t go wrong with this classic look.
4. Get cozy…and cozier
Fall is a time to snuggle up and watch new episodes of your favourite shows, haul out that crockpot and make soups and other wonderful comfort foods. Be sure to set out cozy (guest-worthy) blankets and lightly scented fall candles. If you’ve been leaving your floors bare for summer, now is a good time to add in some accent rugs – not only to keep those feet warm on cold nights, but to warm up the entire room.
